Sweet jesus, LAB color kicks an incredible amount of ass.
So it’s Wednesday night and I decided to take a few minutes to learn about using different color spaces for certain effects – and man, I’m glad I did. I’ve heard and read about LAB color before, but I haven’t had an opportunity to really toy around with it. After some googling, and a few practice runs to get the hang of things, I’m amazed. The bottom line is that I think I’ll be using it a lot more. It is by far one of the best ways I’ve found to give an image some kick, and can really punch up the contrast, color saturation and sharpness in just about any image.
It’ll take a good deal of discipline at this point not to want to use it on everything. I’m currently waiting for Dan Margulis’ book, "The Classic Guide to Color Correction" to arrive from amazon.com, and after seeing what’s possible with LAB color, I’ll probably end up picking up his other book "Photoshop LAB Color: The Canyon Conundrum and Other Adventures in the Most Powerful Colorspace", which specifically deals with fine tuning images in LAB.
You know things are bad when you’re legitimately psyched up and excited about finding a new color space to work with, and thinking about what you can do to your images with your newfound knowledge. This… was… the highlight of my day, so I just wanted to share. Meh.
