iPhone 2.0 – Installation Hell
I’d love to know what 2.0 is like, but this has been the longest, most ridiculous install. Ever. Going on two plus hours and still no iPhone 2.0 for me.
First, was required to download a new version of iTunes (70mb) + Safari (22mb) – then reboot… then iTunes opens up and downloads the iPhone firmware update (220mb). After this, iTunes has to backup the contents of my iPhone… around 14gb. This took damn near 45 minutes, plus another 15-20 minutes to install and verify the firmware. I thought I was out of the woods…or at least close.
Then the iPhone powers off, re-connects to iTunes and I get an error at first saying “We could not complete your iTunes Store request. The connection timed out. Make sure your network settings are correct and your network connection is active, and try again.” Yeah, right… to humor iTunes, I double check, and as I thought i’m connected just fine. So I unplug the iPhone, it re-connects to iTunes, and this is what I’ve gotten for the last half hour:
I checked forums looking for answers… no suggestions worked. Run diagnostics:

So I’m hoping and guessing it’s just overload on their end right now. Meh.To be continued…
11:15 Update: from a long thread found here:
————————————-
Hey Everyone with the error, I found this on the Apple forums from Lappygirl, worked for me …
“I just got off of the phone with iPhone tech support. (had to use my landline!)
After a 20 minute wait, I got to talk to Ashley. She said there are 1100 people on hold and everyone she talked to so far is having the same “accessing iTunes” problem.
She said DO NOT disconnect your phone. Intead, when you get the message saying it timed out, click ok. Then click on any other heading, Music for example, in your itunes. Then go back and click on your iPhone icon.
Keep doing this repeatedly to keep your place in line.
I did this for the past 10 minutes STRAIGHT through and I am now done!!! Honest to god! I dont know how to do screen shots or whatever, but I’m done.
yep, it was just a problem with the server! I just clicked back and forth from downloads to the iPhone and it finally connected. Everything is cool now. Just be patient, and go back and forth, back and forth, back and forth….
————————————-
Still no dice for me, but i’ll keep trying.
12:45 Update: I’m still getting the timeout errors. Damn frustrating, but I guess it could be so much worse. I’ll just keep at it every hour or so as the day goes on with the hopes that i’ll get through eventually. Apple should really know better. wtf?
3:00PM EST Update: Still nothing. Bah… the waiting blows – although I guess it’s good to know we’re not alone. Apple really dropped the ball on this one, and it looks like A LOT of folks are pissed and experiencing the same problems. My plan for now is to just keep the phone connected and try the back and forth music-store/iPhone clicking every hour or so until it works, or I hear otherwise. Some people are now reporting (long scroll to the bottom) that their phones will spontaneously connect in iTunes after just leaving it alone for a while.
3:25PM EST Update: Finally got through. I decided to reboot. After 5-10 minutes of having the phone just sit there, it connected and started to restore my iPhone.

I’m having the same problem.
me too!
any suggestions?!
HELP!!!!!
Looks like the Apple activation servers are getting hammered and sucking wind. Several reports from folks saying they’ve spoken to tech support… consensus is that the iPhone 2.0 update has to connect and be authenticated by Apple, and since everyone is trying to do it at the same time their system is overloaded. Just have to wait it out!
I’ll keep trying and post back if I get anywhere.
Yes,
click back and forth, it works, thank you!
Finally got a screen to come up that says that activation are currently not available and that unplug your phone and try again later. If this had been any other company other than apple the world would be crazy but no, just another crappy apple product.
I dont know if this helps or if it was pure luck but I was trying mine on a wireless connection and then plugged into a wired connection and was able to connect on the first try.
I am getting a similar error. I assume with the release of the 3G this would happen. I tried a wireless and a wired connection. I am still not able to connect. Been trying for over 1 hr now. Any other tips anyone.
I called ATT and they said that it has nothing to do with the 3G or the network connection that it was Apple serversand everyone accessing them at once.
I guess we just keep trying.
10-4 Jacob, that’s my plan as well… just keep trying, even though I guess that will contribute to everyone else’s frustration…
FINALLY, keep clicking off and on the device and it will eventually sync up.
NICE… after a reboot (out of sheer frustration) I finally got through! iTunes now shows “Restoring iPhone Music and Videos”
[...] work out so well. This year, I decided I’d wait until later on in the day to see if the chaos would be different from the last time. It’s 4:30pm EST now, but it looks like it’s the exact same story as last [...]
