I am getting a similar error. I assume with the release of the 3G this would happen. I tried a wireless and a wired connection. I am still not able to connect. Been trying for over 1 hr now. Any other tips anyone.

Finally got a screen to come up that says that activation are currently not available and that unplug your phone and try again later. If this had been any other company other than apple the world would be crazy but no, just another crappy apple product.

Looks like the Apple activation servers are getting hammered and sucking wind. Several reports from folks saying they've spoken to tech support... consensus is that the iPhone 2.0 update has to connect and be authenticated by Apple, and since everyone is trying to do it at the same time their system is overloaded. Just have to wait it out!

I'll keep trying and post back if I get anywhere.
