RED releases specs for DSLR killer(s), jaws drop…
The line between the digital video camera and digital still camera has been totally erased. Capturing digital imagery (both still *and* motion – in super high rez HD) may never be the same because of Jim Jannard. His *other* company, RED Digital Cinema, has released the hounds with their new Epic™ and Scarlet™ DSMC’s (Digital Stills and Motion Cameras). This is the same guy who built Oakley, Inc. from scratch, and could quite possibly have the ability to turn the current SLR market on it’s head if he can get these new cameras out the door.
I am still blown away with the possibilities of this type of modular system, most notably the ability to upgrade individual parts such as the sensor and body separately. They’ve also announced versions with both Canon and Nikon lens mounts. Nice. They’re absolutely amazing, but totally and ridiculously expensive. Like anything bleeding edge, price is the killer… $12k for the "Brain Only" is just a tad on the high side. But – keep in mind that less than 5 years ago you couldn’t even imagine this type of rig existing, and I can’t argue that what you get for that price is pretty insane: a 24MP, Full Frame, 30fps, +HD Video monster. For photojournalists and sports shooters, I would imagine this to be the holy grail of capture – the ability to grab HD Video and stills of a live event as it unfolds would be spectacular, and worth every penny. It’s nice to imagine owning a camera with those capabilities, but I’m currently shooting with a Canon 1DMkIII for fast action, and I have a 5D MkII on the way for large landscapes + HD video – and I think that’s as much as I’ll need… for now
