Nectarheads and fish-eaters
Observing and photographing some of the smallest and largest birds in a span of just a few hours is always quite a privilege, and I really enjoyed doing just that this past weekend. Like their contrasting sizes, the feeding habits of eagles and hummingbirds are totally opposite of one another – I’m guessing it has to do a lot with their size and metabolism. Hummers fly around all day and (sometimes) perch when they get a second to eat, eagles sit around all day and fly only when they’re hungry or looking for food. Random factoids: Hummingbirds have the largest brains of all birds (relative to size) - their brains make up 4.2% of their body weight. Eagles do not have vocal cords. They make high-pitched, shrill squeaking and screeching sounds via the air that passes the bones in their neck.
